Owen Sound’s Otherfolk festival really took off during its third annual instalment last night at various locations around downtown. Now pulling in headliners such as Bidini Band, Doug Paisley and Elliot Brood, the variety of genre and talent is astounding. Last night’s highlights included a rousing set by Bruce Peninsula at the Roxy which had the crowd rushing the stage, as well as the mandolin-toting, seraph-voiced Merival, which our correspondent considered the evening’s breakout performance.

Young Merival, aka Anna Horvath, struck us as a major songwriter and performer, deserving to end up someday soon in the Tower of Song. Her understated but intricate vocal melodies, pensive lyrics and rhythmic, sure-fingered mandolin-picking combined to cast a spell over every person crowded into her downtown Owen Sound venue of Norma Jean’s.
